Case Study

A Prime Part

Northern Precision manufactured a vending machine lock component from ¾″-diameter 303 stainless steel bar stock. The company completed the part in a single machine using 15 operations with 13 different tools, finishing in 3 minutes total. Programming required 6 hours, with 2–3 hours for setup.

  • Three broaching operations (including one internal, 1″ deep) were accomplished with specials using parametric programming.
  • A dual right-angle drill head with ballnose and square-shoulder endmills addressed off-center end-working capability.
  • Cross-holes required ±0.0005″ tolerance precision, solved by programming an endmill to circular-interpolate the hole to the required size.

Producing the part on conventional machines would have required a minimum of five setups for turning, milling and broaching operations.

“It Can Be Done”

Modern Swiss machinery does what older screw machines could not — and the difference is as much attitude as equipment. The can-do philosophy at Northern Precision is simple:

“It can be done; you just have to find a way to do it.”
